Services
Eagle Harbor Engineering (EHE) offers the following services.
  • Modeling / Drafting – Accurate modeling and clear drawings are the foundation for successful projects.  EHE uses Rhino, Solidworks, AutoDesk Fusion 360, and AutoCad for modeling and drafting.  In cases where the original vessel drawings are not available EHE can survey the vessel, or can arrange for cost effective laser measurements for more complex shapes.
  • Structural Design and Analysis – EHE provides designs for hull structure, foundations, ramps, hoisting frames, and many other structures.  Where rules based approaches are not applicable, EHE uses finite element analysis using Autodesk Simulation Mechanical software.  This software can do both linear and non-linear FEA for both static and dynamic analysis.
  • Trim and Stability – EHE uses GHS from Creative Systems, the most widely used program in the industry.  This software can handle virtually any type of hydrostatic analysis.  EHE does:
    • Inclining experiments & deadweight surveys
    • Intact and damaged stability analyses including probabilistic damage stability
    • Trim & Stability Booklets
    • Onboard stability software using Creative Systems GLM
  • Resistance & Propulsion – EHE does resistance and propulsion calculations for all types of vessels using NavCad from Hydrocomp, plus customized spreadsheets for barge resistance.  This includes all facets of drive drain selection for optimized performance.  We also develop tow plans for tows of barges and ships.
  • Motions – Vessel motion analysis for a wide variety of vessels in waves.
  • Mooring Design – Design of single point, spread, and spud mooring systems.
  • Mechanical Systems – EHE does designs for marine machinery and piping systems.  EHE uses Pipe-Flo software for pressure drop calculations to insure piping systems are properly sized and function as intended.
  • Electrical Systems – EHE does AC and DC system design and can produce one-line and schematic diagrams, load analyses, phase balances, fault current analyses, and protective device coordination studies.
  • Regulatory Interface - EHE works directly with regulatory agencies and classification societies on behalf of the customer.
  • Marine Expert Services – EHE provides expert services to the legal profession.
Specializations
EHE has developed considerable expertise in the following areas.  See the projects page for more details.

Barges – Design and modification of deck, tank and special purpose barges of all sizes.

Workboats – Design and modification of tugs, landing craft, utility vessels, and fishing boats in the 30 foot to 175 foot range.

Cranes – EHE has worked with pedestal, bridge, crawler, ringer, and superlift type cranes ranging from less than 5 tons to over 400 tons capacity for both permanent and temporary installations.  This includes structural design, stability, and evaluation of the crane itself.  We have provided de-rated crane charts for operation of land based cranes on barges, both in calm water and in waves.  This is an example of a chart for a Manitowoc 4100 Series 2 crane on a small barge operating in the Beafort Sea.  It shows maximum loads for various radii for 2 foot significant waves from various headings relative to the bow.

Rigging – EHE has provided lifting plans for a number of clients.  Some examples are:
Tug Modules - EHE was asked by a shipyard to determine the cause of an instability which occurred during the flipping of one of the first modules.  Mechanical Event Simulation correctly predicted the problem and EHE did the subsequent lift plans.  This shows the rigging component forces for rotation of the stern module using two cranes and then transitioning the load to a single crane with a chainfall to allow placement with a single crane.  Simulation through the full range of motion insures that peak forces will be caught and that the process is stable.

Pump Can Installation - EHE designed this lift plan for the installation of two pump cans.  The cans shared a single lower support so the contractor wanted to install both cans with the lower support as a single unit.  EHE designed the temporary bracing top and bottom as well as the spreader bars and rigging.  EHE also provided a finite element analysis of the structure to check the stresses in the cans at various stages during the lift.

Thruster Removal - EHE developed these lift plans for thruster removal and replacement on a semi-submersible rig using a derrick barge.  This plan was done to investigate the clearances between the rig and the boom on the derrick barge.  It was done in Rhino.  Separate plans were developed for the rigging of the thrusters.

Cargo Loadouts
EHE has experience in loadouts, sea fastenings, and transport plans for many cargoes onboard barges including petrochemical modules, jack-up rigs, container cranes, concrete pontoons, and wind turbine components.  Loading methods have included lift on, roll on, and float on.  These projects typically involve stability analysis, structural analysis, and vessel motions.

This shows a float off unloading of concrete pontoons by ballasting the barge until the stern grounds and then floating the pontoons off.  The outboard profile is shown in the top view with the port, center and starboard tank level shown in subsequent views.  The pontoons are shown in green in the top view.

Marine Construction Support
We have done many projects for marine construction companies.  These typically involve the use of construction equipment on standard or modular barges.  EHE works with the customer to make sure all stability and structural concerns are met.  We also provide designs for spud or spread moorings on many of these projects.

EHE has worked extensively with FlexiFloat and Poseidon brands of modular barges.  They are ideal for construction projects, particularly in areas which are not accessible by conventional barges.  They also have higher deck strengths than most conventional barges.  The modules can be transported on standard trucks and put into the water with a modest sized crane.  The individual modules are easily and quickly attached with couplers.  The modules are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be configured to suit the project.    Here are some of the modular barge projects EHE has worked on.
